Johannesburg or the City of Gold, as the city is known in South Africa, is the business hub of South Africa, contributing a substantial part of the country's GDP approximately 12 per cent. The city is home to two of the country's most popular football teams and historical arch-rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Johannesburg is also known as the economic engine of Southern Africa and the trendsetter of South Africa. It is a melting pot laced with all the flavours of African cultures and beyond

Despite the hustle and bustle of the big city, Jo'burg is unexpectedly green and orientated towards outdoor living. It has a wealth of trees creating an 'urban forest', and many of the trees are located in the 2328 parks.

Cultural wealth is also in abundance, with a host of interesting museums including the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and the living memory of the South Western Townships, which include the world acclaimed Soweto. The Mai Mai Market is the oldest market in Johannesburg and is a great place to discover traditional remedies. But more than that, Johannesburg has become a truly African city, melding disparate people from across the continent with the descendents of the original Tswana and Ndebele inhabitants and the European, Indian and Chinese settlers.

Today descendents of immigrants from around the world call themselves Joburgers and they are added to daily by a continual stream of migrants, keen to have some of the city's shine rub off on them.

History
The Tswana name for Johannesburg is eGoli, a place of gold. The San and Stone Age people were the first inhabitants of the area. The face of the area changed when an Australian gold prospector generated interest in the mineral wealth beneath the surface. Johannesburg became a city in 1886, during the beginning of the Witwatersrand Gold Rush.

The city also became a political hotspot during the apartheid years. Soweto was an important instrument in the liberation of South Africa. In 1955, many anti-apartheid movements met in Kliptown, Soweto to sign the Freedom Charter. The Charter enshrined the belief in equality for all. It also became the working document for the current Constitution of South Africa.

Football
A heartland of South African football, Johannesburg is the backbone of the professional game. The majority of professional clubs come from the city and its surrounds. The professional football outfits from the city are: Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Jomo Cosmos, BidVest Wits and one of the oldest clubs in the country, Moroka Swallows.

The city centre has been at the core of football development in South Africa. Professional football was formed in the offices of the old Rand Daily Mail newspaper in 1958. In later years, football unity talks took place at the old Rand International Hotel. Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Jomo Cosmos and the now defunct Highlands Park, Rangers and Lusitano have all been championship-winning clubs.

A match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which is dubbed as the ‘Soweto Derby' in South Africa, is the biggest drawcard in the country. Everytime the two meet, they attract a capacity crowd and their rivarly has been well documented throughout the decades.

Jo'burg is home to some of the country's most prized talent that include, Jomo Sono, Kaizer Motaung, Ace Ntsoelengoe, Doctor Khumalo, Lucas Radebe and many others. Sono played with Pele and Franz Beckenbauer at New York Cosmos.

Ntsoelengoe is revered as one of the greatest football players ever to be produced in South African football. He enjoyed immense success in the NASL.

The Premier League-based Wits University (now called BidVest Wit) are a team based at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Due to their location, the team is affectionately known as the 'Clever Boys' or the ‘Students'.

Johanesburg has hosted major games before including the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, which was won by South Africa beating Tunisia 2-0 at Soccer City. The Ellis Park Stadium, situated in the heart of Johannesburg, hosted the historic 1995 Rugby World Cup where South Africa were crowned as the rugby world champions.

Gauteng is the spirit and core of South African football and all the big clubs share the same stadiums, which has created quite a different fan culture to that of fans in Europe. The big teams from Soweto are Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates whose spirited games can be hot-blooded and usually have the nation gripped. Soweto football crowds are good-humoured and festive so joining them is quite conceivable and fun.

The professional season in South Africa is between August and May with teams participating in the Premier Soccer League and a few other competitions. The Chiefs and the Pirates have a nationwide following and their contests are a colourful climax of the Premier Soccer League’s matches. South Africa’s national squad, affectionately nicknamed Bafana Bafana qualified for the 1998 and 2002 World Cup Finals and will have the privilege of competing in the 2010 World Cup on home soil.

Vuvuzela? Contributing to the jovial atmosphere of South Africa's football games are the unique sounds of the vuvuzela, a plastic horn, along with singing and countless other homemade instruments.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, an international tournament for football, that is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. It will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by a nation in the Confederation of African Football, leaving the Oceania Football Confederation as the only FIFA Confederation never to have hosted the event.

Cape Town & Stellenbosch
First, we'll spend time exploring the Cape Peninsula - including the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Then, after an ascent (either on foot or by cable-car) of Table Mountain for stunning views over Cape Town, we head into the picturesque winelands. Stellenbosch is home to 60 wine estates and is considered the wine capital of South Africa. Here you can admire the typical architecture and sample the local vintages!

Ostrich Country & Wilderness N. Park
Next we stop at the dramatic dripstone Cango Caves and spend two nights in a country lodge near the old Victorian influenced town of Oudtshoorn - a town with the greatest concentration of ostriches in the world! From here we head to South Africa's dramatic coast, the Garden Route, and drive to Knysna through Wilderness National Park.

Along the Scenic 'Garden Route'
Knysna is an ideal base from which to explore the Wilderness lakes and Tsitsikamma National Parks and there are plenty of walks and activities on offer during our time here. The final part of our journey takes us west to historic Swellendam with an option to visit Marloth Nature Reserve and walk a scenic nature trail. We end with a visit to the southernmost point in Africa at Cape Agulhas and, in season, search for Southern Right Whales off the Atlantic coast in Hermanus.

Stay in rest camps in the Kruger National Park, which will give you the opportunity to search for as many of the mammal, bird and reptile species as possible. For the second half of the trip you will be transferred to a private lodge near the Kruger Park where you will continue your bush experience.

Other activities can include visits to the cheetah breeding project, the nearby reptile park, or the Moholoholo animal rehabilitation centre. Microlight and balloon flights can be arranged.

Itinerary:
We collect you from either Johannesburg International Airport or your hotel in Johannesburg and travel on one of the many beautiful routes through Mpumalanga to Kruger National Park.

The following days offer morning drives, bush walks and optional afternoon drives with Marie and Carol. You can choose to relax in the afternoons and take a night drive with the Park's rangers followed by dinner in a starlit boma in the bush. Other meals will be taken in the rest camp's restaurant.

For the second half of the trip you will be transferred to a private lodge near the Kruger Park where you will continue your bush experience. Game drives and bush walks are available, guided by the lodge's private rangers.

South Africa 2010: frequent questions

The 2010 Fifa World Cup will take place in South Africa. Whether you plan to be watching the games in a stadium or fan park on the southern tip of Africa, or on the screen back home, here's a collection of quick information on the tournament, and the host country, to help enhance your experience.

Has South Africa hosted big events before?

South Africa regularly hosts major international sporting events, and since 1994 has successfully managed some of the biggest - including the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the 2003 Cricket World Cup, the Women's World Cup of Golf (2005-08), and the only street race in the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport (2006-).

But the Fifa Football World Cup, the world's biggest single-code sporting event - in terms of television audience, bigger than the Olympic Games - is in a class of its own.

For four weeks starting on 9 June 2010, South Africa will be the centre of the world. The 2006 World Cup in Germany was the most extensively viewed event in television history. South Africa 2010 will draw even bigger audiences. The eyes of billions of television viewers, millions of international visitors and the cream of the world's sporting media will be focused on the southern tip of Africa.

We don't aim to disappoint.

Who are Bafana Bafana?
Our national football team is known as Bafana Bafana - "the boys, the boys" in isiZulu. The nickname comes from the fans' cry that went up during the team's triumph at the 1996 African Nations Cup (also hosted in South Africa). Since the end of apartheid and South Africa's sporting isolation, Bafana Bafana have twice qualified - in 1998 and 2002 - for the Fifa World Cup.

What's the difference between football and soccer?
Nothing. While the game is largely known as football in Europe, in the former British colonies - including South Africa, the US and Australia - it's called soccer (from the British Football Association, best known for the FA Cup).

What's a vuvuzela?!
Some would say it's South Africa's national musical instrument. It's a big plastic trumpet, brightly coloured, and is blown with gusto by all fans at every football match in the country. The sound it makes is something between the bellow of a constipated elephant and the buzzing of a giant swarm of baritone bees, but South Africans like it.

Where are the games being played?
2010 Fifa World Cup matches will be held in 10 stadiums: two in Johannesburg and one in each of the other eight host cities. Together, the 10 stadiums will host 64 matches and seat more than 570 000 people during the course of tournament. Five of the 10 are existing stadiums, which are being upgraded, with Soccer City - venue of the opening and final match - undergoing a major upgrade. The other five stadiums are being built from scratch.

Which cities are hosting matches?
Nine South African cities will stage the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Johannesburg
The economic hub of Africa, Johannesburg is a bustling, sprawling city of contrasts, spread across the small but densely populated province of Gauteng.

Cape Town
South Africa's oldest and loveliest city lies in Table Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, in the south of the Western Cape province. Beautiful buildings, the nearby winelands, long white beaches and a rich cultural life make Cape Town South Africa's most favoured tourist destination.

Durban
A warm subtropical place and the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, Durban is a major tourist destination with the busiest port in South Africa.

Pretoria
Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, lying north of Johannesburg in the province of Gauteng. Over 150 years old, it is a place of grand monuments, delightful architecture and lovely open spaces.

Port Elizabeth
Known as the Friendly City, Port Elizabeth lies in Nelson Mandela Bay on the windswept Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape province.

Bloemfontein
The former capital of a Boer republic and now capital of the Free State, Bloemfontein - the name means "flower fountain" - is a pretty city with thousands of rose bushes and some poignant memorials.

Rustenburg
Its tranquil Jacaranda-lined streets belie the fact that the Rustenburg area in North West province is one of the world's most heavily mined regions, with a wealth of platinum underground.

Nelspruit
The capital of Mpumalanga province lies in the fertile valley of the Crocodile River, about 330km east of Johannesburg.

Polokwane
The capital of Limpopo province is ideally situated near the border of the wildlife-rich, world-famous Kruger National Park.

How many tickets will be available?
Some 3-million tickets will be available for the 2010 Fifa World Cup's 64 matches. One third, or a million, will be allocated to South African football fans, another million to international visitors, and the third million to sponsors, teams and the "Fifa family".

Should I come even if I can't get tickets?
Of course! The 2010 tournament is guaranteed to be, as South Africans say, a jol (a party). As in Germany in 2006, public viewing areas with giant screens will be set up. And you can always watch the tournament and get to know the locals at our numerous pubs, restaurants and sports bars.

What time zone is South Africa in?
South African Standard Time is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+2). During June and July - when the tournament will take place - South African time is the same as that in continental Europe, and an hour ahead of the UK. So matches that kick off at 9pm here will be comfortable viewing for Europeans, while US viewers will be taking a lot of early lunches - and Socceroo supporters will be starting their day at five in the morning!

What will the weather be like?
The World Cup will take place in the southern hemisphere winter - but it's warm here in Africa. Johannesburg will be dry, with sunny days and fairly chilly nights. Rustenburg, Pretoria and Nelspruit will be warmer, but Bloemfontein will be cold. Polokwane in the north will be dry and hot, warmer than most European summers. Durban will be pleasant and warm, with some humidity - and the deliciously balmy Indian Ocean to swim in. And while Cape Town is magnificent in good weather - and it can have good weather in winter - in June the city is generally cold, wet and windy, and its ocean icy cold!

What are the people like?
South Africa is a nation of over 47-million people of diverse origins, cultures, languages and beliefs. Visitors to the country always remark on how warm, friendly and welcoming South Africans are. We've had a difficult past, so we don't waste time being difficult people! And we're expert at having fun.
"We can say that the people of South Africa were always friendly, very boisterous and constantly celebrating during our visit to the country," Fifa's inspection team said in their country report. "[They] would stop and show their joy and support of the country's commitment whenever our group passed by."
